Network Installation

This page is for system administrators who wish to install
Psychology on a Disk for use in a networked environment.

Installation

To install Psychology on a Disk 5.0 for use in a networked environment:

  1. Download the standard installation package and save it to disk. Note: it is not necessary to purchase the product or to have a registration code.

  2. Open POAD50.EXE using WinZip or a similar zip file utility and extract the files to a temporary folder. (POAD50.EXE is a self-extracting Zip file and can be opened with compatible zip utilities.)

  3. Run the setup program from the temporary folder with a "/netsetup" parameter:

    Setup_poad_50.exe /netsetup

  4. Proceed through the installation wizard. You will only need to specify the folder on your server in which the program should be installed.
Note: if you run Psychology on a Disk immediately, it will tell you that it can't find your student data file. This is normal, because these files are created during the student installation process. To test your installation, see "Testing your installation" below.

Deployment

The setup instructions provided to students for networked installations assume that a desktop icon and/or Programs menu entry is present on their networked computers. These items should simply execute POAD.EXE from your installation folder. No parameters are necessary.

Testing your installation

To test your installation, run the Psychology on a Disk setup (POAD50.EXE) from a networked machine. Use the following case-sensitive "serial number" in the registration screen:

ADMIN-TEST

You do not need to fill in a name or student ID. The test serial number will allow you to complete student setup, and you should be able to run the program (POAD.EXE). The program will operate normally except that it will not save any information in the test student data file.

About student setup

For generality, the student instructions on this web site and in the retail package assume that each student will downloaded a copy of the Psychology on a Disk setup program, POAD50.EXE. This is, however, not strictly necesary: if there is a network-accessible copy of POAD50.EXE available, students can use that instead of downloading individual copies of the program.

Alternatively, you can allow students to run a locally accessible copy of Setup_POAD_50.EXE, which avoids the initial "Setup" prompt from the self-extractor.

During student setup, students should select the "already installed on my network" option:

When installed in this fashion, setup does not copy the program files to the local computer, nor does it create a program icon, Programs menu entry, or any registry entries. Students will only need to specify a folder in which their exercise records should be stored. This folder can be located on a USB drive or similar removable device.
